How This Corporate Manager Transitioned Into Her Online Career as a Digital Business Manager & Landed Her First Clients

Originally, Theresa had an on and off career in administrative assistant and office management in the brick and mortar corporate world.  But the last few years, she began to feel super bored and unfulfilled with her work – and she was lowkey jealous of her husband’s permanent work-from-home status!  She already had many skills from […]

I spent 2 weeks living + working from a literal 12 I spent 2 weeks living + working from a literal 12th century French castle 🏰 because apparently that’s a thing you can just... do.

this was part of a coworking retreat I joined hosted by @digitalnomadgirls & @chateaucoliving because building a business can be v v lonely — and turns out, sitting around a fireplace with other people also obsessing over Notion dashboards?? wildly healing.

some highlights:
🧚‍♀️ wrote my morning pages while staring out 12th century windows like a reclusive duchess but with wifi
🧚‍♀️ took calls, made content, reviewed team work — all the usual, just with more chandeliers
🧚‍♀️ crafted by the fire, like literally knitting a scarf. who is she???
🧚‍♀️remembered that endless optimization is no good & investing in your creativity is insanely underrated.

also, surprise plot twist: got hit with PMDD for the first time ever while I was there (10/10 do not recommend), but the castle girls made space for that too. having community in those moments?? 😭😭😭

if you’re feeling a little stuck or lonely in your business — this is your sign to change your work environment. work from a castle. or a cabin. or a café. or a park bench.

your business deserves fresh air and less noise. go find it. 🩵
2024: the year that proved drinking matcha and yap 2024: the year that proved drinking matcha and yapping about small business could actually be a viable career??

ft. my two unpaid interns (cats, still pending HR approval), 200+ new students, actual human hires (dream team fr), and enough matcha to fill a bathtub

(swipe for the actual numbers that still feel surreal)
heya! 🥰 for anyone new here, here’s a little heya! 🥰 for anyone new here, here’s a little peek into my self-employment story:

2016 —

Fresh out of university & had 0 clue what to do. Started a 6-month corporate internship at minimum wage working 40+ hours. Seriously panicked about having to do this every day for 40+ years.

Thought something was wrong with me & had a tiny (massive) quarter-life crisis.

Began freelancing in the evenings & weekends at $10/hr in ~desperate~ need to find something (anything) else. It was completely unstrategic, no niche, no idea what I was doing.

2017 —

Increased my freelancer rates to $15/hr then $20/hr.

Started making enough $ to maybe try it full-time? Made the little (petrifying) leap to do it full-time.

I was booked out as a freelancer a few months after.

Signed my first digital business management (DBM) client — she let me manage all the projects in her agency, her remote team & her back-end systems! 🥰

I was OBSESSED. I had found “My Thing”. We began slow traveling as well!

2018 —

Fully embraced the DBM role; I was working with 6-figure clients on project, teams and operations management.

Traveled more and increased my rates to $35/hr.

2019 —

Signed more clients. Traveled more & increased rates to $50/hr.

Decided to go full nomad & gave up our apartment (so scary as a risk-averse Type-A planner).

2020 —

Spent 6 months slow traveling in Asia. Helped my clients scale to 7 figures.

Began creating my first-ever (v scary) solo business (DBM Bootcamp) on the side of freelancing full-time.

After 200+ hours and 6 months... I officially had a business of my own! 😭

We moved to Prague. Loved it there!

2021 —

Let go of all my freelance clients (</3) so I could give my own business a full, proper go. Became a full-time business owner + eNtrEprEneUr.

Also became a wannabe Youtuber & started making videos. Moved to Berlin & love it here! :)

2022 + 2023 —

Adopted 2 kitties. Still get to run my business & make Youtube videos.

Did coaching & consulting on digital products, launches & ops as well. 😌 Got my trademark!

2024 —

Annnd we just hit 10K subscribers on YouTube!! 😭 Time has flown & I’m so excited to see what this year brings. 🤍
heyaaaa, if you’re new here - I’m deya! I'm heyaaaa, if you’re new here - I’m deya!

I'm a freelancer, digital business manager, and most recently, a small biz owner and eNtREPreNeuR. 😌

I also make Youtube videos!

☁️ I've been fully self-employed since 2017
☁️ I love cats, matcha, cute cafes, carrot cake, 1,000+ piece puzzles and world of warcraft
☁️ I’m the proud founder of dbm bootcamp
☁️ my favorite work tasks are making project plans, color coding everything & obsessing over simple systems

sooooo if you're looking for no-fluff advice, actually-realistic strategies and an overly-enthusiastic hype girl for *your* self-employed journey... yay!

what a coincidence bc that’s exactly what’s on the menu. 🥯🍞🥖
